Project Management has become a key function across all industries and has become a common language that ties different organizations from diverse industries. The same lifecycle of Initiation, Planning, Execution and Closure is still the central theme regardless of the nature of the project. However, the Development and Humanitarian sector stands out more from the rest of the industries; not because it doesn’t follow the usual cycle but because of several factors that makes the project environment more rigorous than usual. In a Development and Humanitarian project setting, project success is not measured in business ROI, the recipient community plays a major role in the decision-making process as a principal stakeholder, and a lot of these idiosyncrasies actually affect the wat a project is carried out to completion. Aside from the operating difference in the project environment, another huge problem is the skill gap of project managers. A lot of project managers shifting to this sector are already skilled in project management; the problem however is, they are usually not aware on how to handle, or work in a development or humanitarian background as they have not been exposed to these types of situations thus, resulting to higher stakeholder dissatisfaction, poor project design, inadequacy of capacity or resource, and ultimately, project failure.
